Fire and Heist

By Sarah Beth Durst

Blurb:
In Sky Hawkins's family, leading your first heist is a major milestone--even more so than learning to talk, walk, or do long division. It's a chance to gain power and acceptance within your family, and within society. But stealing your first treasure can be complicated, especially when you're a wyvern--a human capable of turning into a dragon.

Embarking on a life of crime is never easy, and Sky discovers secrets about her mother, who recently went missing, the real reason her boyfriend broke up with her, and a valuable jewel that could restore her family's wealth and rank in their community.

With a handpicked crew by her side, Sky knows she has everything she needs to complete her first heist, and get her boyfriend and mother back in the process. But then she uncovers a dark truth about were-dragon society--a truth more valuable and dangerous than gold or jewels could ever be.

Review:
I received this book in the December box from FairyLoot, but if I was going of the cover and description alone I don't think I would have actually bought it to read. So I've gave it a chance, as I've not actually read many dragon books before or should I say were-dragons for this book.

This book started off with Sky's mother missing after completing a heist, following the heist it meant that the Hawking family had to get rid of some of their belongings because the failed heist shamed the family and at the reckoning their ranking was reduced. Sky is still in search for her mother and doesn't want to believe that she is dead. She wants her mother back because her brothers aren't the same since she left and her dad isn't as happy without her, so she makes it her task to find her or at least get answers of what has happened and what the heist was that she was doing.

The general story of this book was quite enjoyable even though there wasn't much detail at certain parts that could have done with it and a lot of detail in parts that didn't need it. The characters themselves weren't lovable but they weren't hateable at the same time. The only character that I felt I truly enjoyed was Gabriella, she was just the excitable person who was geeky and loved finding out new things about Sky's race once she was in on it. Ryan on the other hand was a jerk, but then when you discover the reason why he did those things then it's kind of understandable but I still don't really forgive him. Only because if you do truly love someone it doesn't matter what anyone else thinks, if you think it's true love then you should fight for it, no matter what your age is, don't let other people destroy your happiness.

The book itself was short, and fast paced. But I did generally think that it was quite rushed and the author just wanted to get it over and done with, I also felt like a lot more could have happened but it just never did. It was also quite predictable at times which ruined my experience of this book that's what effected the rating of the book, as well as how the plot was developed.

The ending wasn't anything spectacular and didn't make me hope that there was a second book, it just made me think that this book could have been made so much better if there was more action or we discovered more about other people's lives.

The style of writing for me was more based at a start of secondary school age too, which I do enjoy at times if the story is good but I just generally think that this book wasn't for me sadly.

Review:
I decided to get this box because I love Cassandra Clare, Lord of the Rings and Kendare Blake. I also have Six of Crows on my to read list, which I will hopefully get round to reading this year at some point. I also got this box because it was announced that there would be a cushion cover included which I've never got before and I thought it was fitting because we are due to move to our new house any time soon.

When I opened the box the first item that I came across was the cushion cover. I like the quote but I wasn't too keen on the picture design on the other side. I possibly won't end up using this cover but I'll think about it and decide on how my new study and reading corner feels and looks like to see whether it would be suitable. The actual cushion sizes nice and I feel it is a decent size especially for a bum or head while reading. The cushion cover was inspired by The Raven Boys by Maggie Stiefvater.

The next item that I came across was the Will & Jem candle. I really liked this item but in a way I wished that the Cassandra Clare item wasn't the candle and that it was the cushion cover but never mind. The candle scent itself I didn't really like maybe it will smell better once it is actually burning. I also thought the colour of it wasn't really appealing and didn't suit the characters at all.

This next item I was warned to open it gently but I wasn't sure what it actually was, I realise it says on the tin but you should know by now I don't read these things and I never read the spoiler card until I've looked at all the items. This item was salted caramel hot chocolate. This sounds super yummy considering I've just got myself addicted to caramel coffee beans. It smells really nice too and it's nice to have another chocolate flake rather than powder one. The hot chocolate is inspired by Lia and Pauline's friendship in The Remnant Chronicles by Mary E. Pearson. I also really like how this is vegan friendly especially since it arrived in veganary, it's just really fitting.

The Lord of the Rings item was slightly disappointing as it was a woodmark, this was inspired by Sam and Frodo's friendship. The design of it was really nice though but my only worry is with this woodmark and any woodmark is that the colours will leak onto my book pages.

FairyLoot must have been stalking me and seen how dry my lips were because the next item was lip balm, which was inspired by Three Dark Crowns and the friendship between Jules and Arsinoe. I thought this was quite nice I've not actually opened it yet to see what the colour or the smell/flavour is. I'm hoping maybe a lemon grass with a hint of raspberry.

The final item apart from the book was a hair band. This was inspired by Six of Crows by Leigh Bardugo. I'm not sure how I feel about this because I don't actually use hair bands, it is a pretty design and I may just wear it at the gym but I'm not sure. My heads quite big so it may not actually fit.

Now onto the good item in the box, the book! It was Circle of Shadows by Evelyn Skye. This book has been appearing on my good reads feed and on my Facebook group a lot more and it's actually been enticing me so it's quite nice to actually get a book I want in a box. The cover looks so pretty and I love the colour of the sprayed edges as it is like a pale lavender. It makes me want to dye my hair that colour again. My review for this book will be up shortly as I am just starting it the day I wrote the review.

This Cruel Design (This Mortal Coil Series, book 2)

By Emily Suvada

Blurb:
The nightmare of the outbreak is finally over, but Cat’s fight has only just begun.

Exhausted, wounded, and reeling from revelations that have shaken her to her core, Cat is at a breaking point. Camped in the woods with Cole and Leoben, she’s working day and night, desperate to find a way to stop Lachlan’s plan to reprogram humanity. But she’s failing—Cat can’t even control her newly regrown panel, and try as she might to ignore them, she keeps seeing glitching visions from her past everywhere she turns.

When news arrives that the Hydra virus might not be as dead as they’d thought, the group is pushed into an uneasy alliance with Cartaxus to hunt down Lachlan and fix the vaccine. Their search takes them to Entropia, a city of genehackers hidden deep in the desert that could also hold the answers about Cat’s past that she’s been searching for.

But when confronted with lies and betrayals, Cat is forced to question everything she knows and everyone she trusts. And while Lachlan is always two steps ahead, the biggest threat to Cat may be the secrets buried in her own mind.

Review:
This is the second book to the This Mortal Coil series, I enjoyed the first one a lot so I had high hopes that this one would be just as good but I was a bit disappointed.

Overall I would say the book is quite quick paced, especially at the beginning. It doesn’t take long for everything to kick off and for exciting scenes. I’m use to quite slow books so it does make a pleasant change for me.

A cute quirk in the book for me was the development of Cat’s and Leoben’s friendship. I just really enjoyed their scenes together properly better than Cat’s scenes with anyone else. One of things I particularly enjoyed was Leoben trying to pick a nickname for Cat and came up with Squid which became a running joke throughout.

Even though I didn’t agree with all the twists I would say there was plenty of them and that helped make the book more interesting and the good ones did shadow the bad twists.

I would say the big difference between this book and the first one is that it was a bit far fetched. What I liked about the first book was the development of science and healing, it was good and not too unrealistic. But in This Cruel Design it seemed to stretch it too far for me to enjoy as much.

*SPOILERS*
In the first chapter of the book we already have a major plot twist. It turns out Jun Bei is Cat. This is developed further on in the book to the point it gets confusing. I didn’t mind the reveal at the beginning when it came across rather simple. Cat was Jun Bei, but Lachlan changed her appearance to look more like him and wiped her memories so she’d forget. However I started to dislike the twist when it got overcomplicated. Jun Bei was a person of her own inside Cat and it was more of a body invasion which doesn’t make sense, at least to me.

When Dax makes an entrance into this book we see he is now infected with the virus by Cartaxus to encourage him to make a cure quicker. This did come to a shock to me and thought he was going to die, in the end he didn’t. My problem with this was how slow his condition was going considering the strangers that had it were dying really quickly and in the book they kept going on about how fast the virus was killing now and how Dax was as at that stage but yet he lived.

Another problem I had with Dax character was how he ended up being a love interest of Leoben, I just don’t think that made total sense in the series and there wasn’t any hints in the first book. It just seemed a random coupling.

I did like the creation of Anna being a main character, we knew of Anna from the first book but hadn’t met her or knew that much about her. It was good to see this characters storyline develop. I also liked her bad ass attitude but it’s understandable to be that way when you can’t die.

We also had further development of Cat’s background. We now know that Lachlan was actually her father and Regina ended up being her mother technically as Cat was a clone of the original baby. I liked this storyline and though it fit quite well.

Cole’s development ruined Cole for me. He just wasn’t a nice protective man anymore but more of a threat. Whilst reading I thought Mato was a better match for Cat but then Mato proved to be psycho so in the end I decided non fit. I guess if I was to ship a couple in this series it would be Cat and Leoben.

One of my favourite scenes in this book was when Cat chopped her hand off to help with her escape. That was the most unexpected thing in this book. It was really well written and I also liked how her new hand wasn’t her hand and that it turned out Regina stole it.

Eventually in the book we got to see Agnes again who went missing in the beginning of the first book. I was worried the author was gonna forget to make her a part of the story again and although she didn’t have a big role to play she did help in a small way and her disappearance was explained.

I believe there is going to be a third book and I’m interested to see how this series plays out but I’m not as excited as I was for this book. As I’m worried it won’t be as good as the first like this one was. For that reason I’m giving it 3 stars.

Amber Vial (Mixologists and Pirates , book 1)

By Frost Kay

Blurb:
Fact #257 - Allie Sai should have been named "Unlucky."

It made complete sense that the girl terrified of flying and aliens would be drafted for colonization of an alien planet. Right? Right??

She had one choice. Desertion. But again... Unlucky.

A failed escape attempt leaves her chained to an airship chair with nothing but her bag, a vial of her family's super moonshine, and her anxiety for company (so much fun). Numbing her fear seemed like a brilliant idea - until pirates attack her ship looking for goods of the female variety.

Looks like she'll have to save herself, but luck was never on her side. Maybe one day that would change, and her pirate would turn into a prince, but not today. Today, she cursed her bootlegging family's moonshine.

It was just one sip... maybe two.

Review:
This is the first book in the series and I must say that I loved this book. I loved how the main character is terrified of flying, and I can see why Allie has this fear as the more you think about it the more scary it becomes in my eyes anyways. Other people may not agree but oh well.

The style of writing was fast paced and I really enjoyed it. The characters that we were introduced to in this first book were reasonably developed I'd love to find out more about them and how they socialise with one another, but so far I quite enjoy them considering how short the book is.

The story seems to do good as well considering not much has happened but then it seems the major set up has been sorted which I find really nice that this has been done all in the first book and I really can't wait to read the others.

Certain scenes in this book were extremely funny and I can't wait to read future scenes. I found though that the setting reminded me of the 100 series slightly because they were being sent back to earth and that they may come across other species.

The moonshine is quite a good thing to include and I'd love to learn more about it and how if you don't mix it right that it can poison you.

If you love sci-fi and friendships then this book is 100% for you.

Theme: Unbreakable Bonds

Items:

  • Will & Jem Candle by Geeky Clean
  • Salted Caramel Hot Chocolate by The Tea Leaf Co
  • Fellowship Friendship Woodmark by Ink and Wonder Designs
  • Lip Balm by Book and Nook
  • Dregs Hair Band by Fiction Tea Designs
  • Tarot Trading Cards by FairyLoot
  • Circle of Shadows by Evelyn Skye
Review:
The theme for this box was Unbreakable Bonds, I was initially very excited for this box because it comes with a cushion cover, which I’ve always wanted. However, overall I did find this box disappointing. I think I personally would have enjoyed the box more if the pillow was the Infernal Devices item as that was the book theme I was most excited for and it ended up being the candle.

The cushion cover was a quote from the book The Raven Boys, which I haven’t heard of before. It does look fairly nice, but I’m waiting to get a cushion to see how well it looks. I also appreciate how it is double sided.  I do also like how FairyLoot specified the size of the cushion though, that was very convenient.

The candle was the Infernal Devices item, it is a pretty a candle and it does smell great. It was quite a manly smell which is suitable for the theme of the candle.

My favourite item in the box has to be the hot chocolate. I haven’t read The Remnant, the book it’s based on but the drink tastes amazing. It was salted caramel flavoured which was a lovely twist, by far the best item in the box.

The Lord of the Rings item was also something I was really looking forward to and again ended up being disappointing. It was a bookmark, a very pretty one I’ll add but just not as good of item that it should have been for the namesake.

Then the box came with a lip balm. This was the Three Dark Crown items which is already on my to read pile. I quite liked this, I always need a new lip balm and it does taste oddly nice. I believe it was violet and mint flavoured but you can taste the different flavours at different times.

The hair band I didn’t like, I didn’t like the design and I can’t picture myself having much use for it. I sometimes wear them when on holiday to stop my head from burning but that’s probably it’s only use. Definitely not my cup of tea.

The trading cards was A Court of Thorns again but the next box, they’re gonna start changing the book. Personally I think every month it should be a different fandom, rather than doing a few of the same one before changing it. Just think it allows every fandom to have more enjoyment out of them.

The book was Circle of Shadows by Evelyn Skye and it does look pretty and definitely sounds interesting so I don’t think that will be a disappointment, hopefully. I also didn't  realise the pages were sprayed.

I’ve decided to skip the February box and have bought the March 3 year anniversary box so I’m hoping that one will be extra special as it was good last year.
