Circle of Shadows (Circle of Shadows Series, book 1)

By Evelyn Skye

Blurb:
Sora can move as silently as a ghost and hurl throwing stars with lethal accuracy. Her gemina, Daemon, can win any physical fight blindfolded and with an arm tied around his back. They are apprentice warriors of the Society of Taigas—marked by the gods to be trained in magic and the fighting arts to protect the kingdom of Kichona.

As their graduation approaches, Sora and Daemon look forward to proving themselves worthy of belonging in the elite group—but in a kingdom free of violence since the Blood Rift Rebellion many years ago, it’s been difficult to make their mark.

So when Sora and Daemon encounter a strange camp of mysterious soldiers while on a standard scouting mission, they decide the only thing to do to help their kingdom is to infiltrate the group. Taking this risk will change Sora’s life forever—and lead her on a mission of deception that may fool everyone she’s ever loved.

Love, spies, and adventure abound as Sora and Daemon unravel a complex web of magic and secrets that might tear them—and the entire kingdom—apart forever.

Review:
I received this book in a FairyLoot box, I possibly would have chosen this book in a book store because the story sounds good and the cover is quite attractive and enticing.

So this book is about people having special powers and being part of a set of tribes. Which is pretty cool being honest.

The book starts of with an exhibition act in front of Empress Aki, where Sora and Daemon have planned a little trick with fireworks. I found this scene quite funny and typical of rebelling students.

Sora and Daemon should be trying quite hard with their studies so they get a decent job or at least the ones they want. Their two friends that they hang around with (can't remember names it was a long time ago that I read it and I'm only just getting round to writing the review) were actually really interesting I found that the friendship between all 4 was really strong and you can see this throughout the whole book.

The relationship between Daemon and Sora is quite complicated because you can tell that they love one another but they know it is forbidden so try to hide their feelings for one another. It obviously comes out at some point within the book but I won't say when or what happens.

I feel slightly sorry for Sora because it feels like her relationship with her parents is quite forced and she treads around them quite lightly. She still hasn't got over the death of her sister, either has the rest of her family, which I can understand as they obviously feel guilty about her death. Sora seems to struggle the most with guilt and this shows towards the middle to the end of the book when she starts opening up to Daemon after certain events. I like that throughout the book you find out how her sister died and the events that happened around her death.

There was quite a few moments in this book that were really interesting and captivating but then at other times the book seemed to drag on. Also while reading the story, it didn't really develop much and there wasn't much action to really keep you that interested. The amount the story developed compared to the size of the book was really disappointing, I'm not too sure whether I'd read the next book in the series. I will see what happens closer to the time, but I know I won't be pre-ordering it.

This book is really good for friendships, character development and history on events. But it's not great for action and well developed stories, I just feel like this book is lacking a great amount of action as it was quite slow at times.

I'd recommend this book to people who don't mind slow books, great friendships, complicated love, traitors, twists, and oriental history.

The Tainted (Dominion of Ash, book 1)

By Frost Kay

Blurb:
She never should've taken the dare.

In a destroyed world plagued with pestilence and monsters, nothing was easy. It's brutal, deadly, and most often, short.

Hazel thought she understood who her enemies were: starvation, infection, her mama's disgusting lima beans, and the Tainted - human beasts full of death, fury, and poison. That's why she never saw it coming.

The death. The lies. The complete betrayal.

No one said love wouldn't destroy you.

Review:
This is my second series of Frosts that I have read. I highly enjoyed it but not as much as mixologists and pirates.

This series follows a girl called Hazel, it is coming up to the blending ceremony where she must choose a husband to rule Harbor alongside her. She put it off the year before because she had just lost her best friend/lover and was not ready to choose someone while she was still grieving him. Hazel seems to struggle with who will do the town good as she does not love any of them and still misses Matt a lot, he is with her in every thought.

The night before the blending she ends up arguing with her father about her mother and needs to go on a walk to get some space and think about her choices. She leaves the wall and comes across her three options for the blending inviting her to the party with her worst enemy Genevieve.

From this point on there is quite a few trigger scenes for rape and self harm. So if you are effected by those topics then I'd suggest not reading it.

I loved how there was certain aspects from Mixologists and Pirates coming through in this series too. Such as another species that has heightened sight and smell, moon time for periods, and moonshine. I wasn't too keen on how there was a character with the same name as the other series though.

The actual plot of this book was excellent. There was a lot of adventure, twists and shocking moments. I feel like the main character was quite well developed but the minor characters that interacted with her could have done with more development, hopefully this will come further into the series.

But I'd definitely recommend this book if you are wanting something unique, set in a realistic world with a hint of sci-fi.

The Storm Crow (The Storm Crow Series, book 1)

By Kalyn Josephson

Blurb:
In the tropical kingdom of Rhodaire, magical, elemental Crows are part of every aspect of life...until the Illucian empire invades, destroying everything.

That terrible night has thrown Princess Anthia into a deep depression. Her sister Caliza is busy running the kingdom after their mother's death, but all Thia can do is think of all she has lost.

But when Caliza is forced to agree to a marriage between Thia and the crown prince of Illucia, Thia is finally spurred into action. And after stumbling upon a hidden Crow egg in the rubble of a rookery, she and her sister devise a dangerous plan to hatch the egg in secret and get back what was taken from them.

Review:

I received this book as an ARC through Decembers FairyLoot Box. I was wary of reading this book because I read other people's reviews and saw that there was trigger warnings of depression and self harm.

I admit there is a trigger warning of depression but I wouldn't really say that there's a trigger warning for self harm. The only bit that could be classed as self harm is when Anthia walks in on the Queen and she has her sleeves up and sees the cuts on her arm. But there's no description on actually cutting herself and it is not because she is suffering with mental health problems. It is just because she believes that if she gives her blood to the goddess she will become stronger. So if anything she only suffers with self belief problems.

This book starts of with Anthia with her aunties crow Iyla, trying to perform a difficult flying move. We get an insight at this point that she has a stronger relationship with her aunty than her mother because her aunty sticks up for her and covers her even though she took her crow without permission.

It is the night of the sky dance when This is able to choose her crow but things change for the worst and Illucia soldiers burn all of the rookerys where the eggs are moments before hatching. This is when Thia's depression starts because she lost her mother and her aunty as they were trying to rescue some of the eggs and protect the castle. Thia also becomes scared of fire at this moment as she tries to put out the flames on her aunty and gets burnt in the process.

So the main part of this story is that there were several types of crows that helped the kingdom of Rhodaire but now that all the crows are dead, Thia and her sister Caliza have to decide on how best to help their kingdom. But Thia is suffering with bad depression and not leaving her bed because she is suffering with grief. Caliza is also struggling because her mother never taught her the true politics of being Queen but knows that she must do the right thing to make her mother proud even though she is not alive anymore. So Caliza has agreed to marry her sister to the Prince of Illucia to help both of the kingdoms. Thia really doesn't like this because they were the ones that killed all the crow eggs and destroyed her kingdom.

But things change and a plan is put in place before Thia is sent to Illucia to marry the Prince.

I found this story excellent, it was well organised and there was a lot of action and plot twists. I loved all the different characters as they all had different personalities. At times I really didn't like some of the characters especially the Prince of Illucia because he was so stuck up and really annoying, so I understood how Thia felt about him. But then when you discovered more of the background of certain characters you understood why they were like that. I also liked how that there was a lesbian romance within the book. There seems to be a lot more of it in young adult books now, I appreciate how they are finally becoming accepting of what other people like and how they feel towards people.

I also liked that Thia seemed to be making process with her depression throughout as she had a task to do and she was determined but then when she had a set back in her plan it knocked her mentality down which is understandable. So I really like how Kalyn portrayed depression in a real life picture.

I got to about 90% of this book and knew that it was going to have to end on a cliff hanger because there wasn't physically enough pages to finish the story how I would have finished it. But the ending was pretty good and I did like it even though it was a cliff hanger. In a way I wish it wasn't an ARC so I wouldn't have to wait so long for the next book.

I'd recommend this book to anyone that; loves adventure, action, story twists, betrayal and, romance.

Cyan Toxin (Mixologists and Pirates, book 4)

By Frost Kay

Blurb:
Fact 645 - High heels make great weapons.

Somehow, Allie always managed to attract every sociopath within a 100 click radius. Don't ask her how she did it. She chalked it up to the unlucky curse that had plagued her all her life. And Sloven the Slayer was no different. Creepy was his middle name. Luckily, her mama had taught her the advantage of a well placed kick.

Fact 792 - Allie hated liars, especially gorgeous ones of the male variety.

After the attempt on her life and her team's betrayal, she tried to go back to her life, to ignore how lonely she was, to forget the nightmares that plagued her and the face of the one man she still wanted despite his lies. But life was never that simple.

Fact 864 - Good doesn't always triumph. Sometimes evil just slaps you in the face and steals your popsicle.

It was just one lie.

Review:
This book started straight after the ending of book 3. Which is when we discovered that Blade wasn't who we thought he was. This was a great twist to the series and I was not expecting it at all, it changes the whole out look on the book now as you start to question who he really is and what part he has had within the story. It is obvious though that Blades feelings for Allie are true though and he does still care for her no matter that she now knows who he really is.

The moonshine is complete and Allie is at the party ready to administrate it to the King. I love how Allie believes in herself that she can attract someone just with her confidence and personality rather than the clothes everyone expects her to wear. This shows that it's not really clothes that make a person attractive it's the way a person holds themselves and how they feel about their body that grabs other people's attention. This is great for Frost to put across in her book because in my opinion it shows she values a persons personality a lot more.

Within this book there are scenes of abuse towards women so if this is a trigger for you then it is best not to read it. There is also post traumatic stress disorder signs throughout the book. For these two things to be mentioned within the book is great, as it acknowledges the fact that these happen in the real world and that mental health problems do exist as many people just turn a blind eye to them when they should be acknowledged.

Towards the end of the book we discover who Allie's friends really are. It's quite upsetting to be honest to discover the people she had become so close to she doesn't want to know anymore because they betrayed her. But then at the same time they were still there for her even though they lied so I'm not too sure how I'd react if those were my friends.

Allie's character has developed so much throughout the series and she has become such a strong female lead I wasn't really expecting. Her friend Jer doesn't really make much of an appearance sadly throughout the series, not as much as I'd like.

Once again this book ended in a cliffhanger but it is so worth the read and it's only a month till the next one comes out so I can forgive Frost for this.

Scarlet Venom (Mixologists and Pirates, book 3)

By Frost Kay

Blurb:
It was laughable that her blackmailers expected her to create a truth serum. If they’d done their homework, they would’ve known her brewing capabilities were nil, she flunked chemistry, and her moonshine was on the toxic side. So for once in her unlucky life, luck was on her side… until she almost blew up the lab. Unfortunately, singed eyebrows were the least of her concern.

Fact 543 - Aliens don't understand personal space.

Nothing was off limits. If they weren’t asking about her heat cycle, males were sniffing her for compatibility. One cocky Av even tried to claim her as his mate, but that wasn’t happening, no matter how good looking he was. But staying immune to his antics proved more difficult than Allie expected. Kind words, gorgeous eyes, and wicked grins were always her weakness.

Fact 678 - The line between loathe and love easily blurred.

It was just one kiss… maybe two.

Review:
This is book 3 in this amazing series. We start with Allie Sae starting to make the moonshine carry the truth serum for the King.

In this book Allie's character becomes more developed and she starts to feel like she fits into the book a lot more. I love her personality as she is quite stubborn and forward, she is never afraid of telling people how she feels or how they get on her nerves. Which is great because there isn't many books that contain a female character with that personality, or if there is I've not read many.

The other characters that we have now discovered in this book are also great, at first I thought there was far too many characters being introduced but by the end of the book I couldn't imagine the book with less characters. They just fit together perfectly. I love how each one has a different personality and how each of them interact with Allie different;y which makes it a lot more interesting to read and funny at times.

The bit I found most funny was when they were trying to find a suitable dress for Allie to wear to this party for the King, and she found out all the males had chosen the dresses. It's just typical men knowing what suits a girl best.

There is the start of some romance in this book which I wasn't expecting but I think it is quite fitting to be honest and I actually really enjoy it and hope that it goes somewhere but we will see.

The story-line in this book doesn't really change much it just follows on from the previous book but I don't mind that because it is so short that I don't feel like it's effecting the quality of the book and it is still great. There is so much action and planning going on in the book that you get so engaged that you forget about everything around you, which is so great as I haven't read a book like that for a while.
